Birthday Girl

Today marks 7 years since Mikaela joined our family. She is seriously the most determined girl you'll meet. If she can't do something she works at it until she gets it.

Ben was once cutting down a pine tree in our back yard; the previous owners LOVED pine, pine trees, pine bushes, it's too much pine for us; and before it was time for timber, he cut the branches off pretty high up leaving nubs. Mikaela used those tiny little nubs and climbed maybe to the middle before she couldn't go further. Ben encouragingly teased her saying she'd never be able to get to the top. That teasing was enough to fire her up and she was to the top of those branches before we knew it!

That's how she approaches most things and I think it's going to serve her well in life.

Mikaela asked to go to the beach for her birthday, which for us in Utah is going to the lake. Unfortunately, the forecast for Bear Lake was thunderstorms and windy so we had to quickly make other plans. Mikaela chose to go on a bike ride, get her FREE ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins, and then we rented two movies from Redbox using a Redbox BOGO code (which means movie night for me and the hubs). We capped the day by having dinner with her grandparents.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks we'll head out to Barnes and Noble and get her FREE birthday treat and to Toys R Us to use her $3 off a $3 purchase coupon that Toys R Us sent.
Here's how you can get these FREE kiddo birthday offers!

Baskin Robbins Birthday Club: Sign up for an account and then enter your family member's birthdays. You'll get an email with the free birthday cup or cone coupon about a week before their birthday.

Redbox: There are a few different ways to get FREE movie codes. The first is to sign up for their Text Club by texting SIGNUP to 727272. You'll then be texted back a free movie code and will start to receive other special offers exclusive to text club members, which habitually includes FREE rentals!

Download their app (Iphone or Android) and receive a FREE movie code by logging into the app, going to settings and checking the box to receive notifications. In about an hour you should have a FREE movie credit posted to your account.

Sign up for Redbox emails. After you confirm your email address they'll send you a code for a FREE 1 day DVD rental.

Consider signing up for Redbox Play Pass. It's basically a punch pass program where you get 1 free rental for every ten rentals. You'll also get a free one night rental on your birthday and on your Play Pass Anniversary. What's really awesome about Play Pass is that all the free rentals you get for being a member of their text club, signing up for the emails, and having the app COUNT towards the 10 rentals. I've already received 2 free rentals and I rarely pay for using Redbox.

Finally, you can follow Redbox on social media where they sometimes post coupon codes and special deals. You can follow on Facebook, TwitterInstagram, or Pinterest.

Barnes and Noble: Join the Kid's Club (up to age 13) and you'll receive a 30% off one item coupon upon signing up, $5 reward for every $100 spent (online or in store), and receive a free cupcake/cookie/rice krispie coupon on your child's birthday.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

I've been making our own laundry detergent for over a year now. It works wonderfully, I know exactly what's in it, smells great, and lasts forever! Here's what you need to make your own: 55 oz. Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda  (you can find this in the laundry detergent aisle usually on the highest or lowest shelf) 76 oz. 20 Mule Team Borax  (you can find this in the laundry detergent aisle usually on the highest or lowest shelf) 4 lb. Baking Soda 26 oz. Downy Unstoppables or other scent booster 3-4 bars Fels-Naptha or Ivory Soap  (I used to use Fels-Naptha but at $1.69 per bar it's more economical to use Ivory soap and it works just as well) Combine washing soda, baking soda, borax, and scent booster. I use an extra 5 gallon bucket to mix. Grate soap and add to powder mixture. Using a food processor makes this much faster!  When finished you should have 2 gallons worth of laundry detergent. Each load only needs 1 t...

Birthday Budgets

This past month we've been celebrating Tafton's 9th Birthday. He loves to read and I love to see him reading. He'll use phrases that sound so odd coming out of a 9 years old mouth, But I really enjoy hearing them. He is so smart! Because he's the oldest he can be somewhat of a police officer trying to keep the younger kids in line - it's important to him that everyone follow the rules and he can get so disappointed in himself when he thinks he's fallen short. I'm humbled that I've been chosen to be his mother, to guide, teach, and prepare him for this life. One area I want to prepare my kids in is finances. I wish for them to make smarter choices with their money than we have! One thing I want them to understand is that money is finite. If you spend a dollar, you no longer have that dollar.  In line with this, we decided to let our kids manage a birthday budget once they turn 8. We give them a dollar amount and with that they can decide to have ...

Gazelle Intense

I've been a fan of Dave Ramsey for several years. But even though we've been fans; listening to his podcast, reading his books; we haven't gone full gazelle intense yet. Well guess what?! 2017 is the year!!! We're going gazelle intense!!!! I'm crazy excited!!! So what is gazelle intense? Basically, it's getting really focused and really angry at your debt. Angry enough that you want to kick it to the curb and get it out of your life for good.  I feel like I've been working on paying off all our debt forever!!!! and I'm sick and tired of it! What's worse is the reason  why  we haven't paid it off is because we HAVEN'T been following his plan by the  book  (literally☺). We've used our credit card instead of an emergency fund, we've signed up for more student loans when we should've cash flowed, and we didn't do the snowball, instead we paid extra in drips and drabs.  No more! and I'm super excited. I'l...
